ABOUT SNOWDON WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Snowdon is a wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned wildlife. Since 1989 the Sanctuary has continuously housed and cared for a wide range of mammals and
birds: typically 30 to 50 mammals and birds of many species yearly, ranging from fawns, skunks,  ongbirds, squirrels, and badgers to cougars, bears, bobcats, birds of prey, and wolves.  Animals received by Snowdon are in distress due to injury, loss of parents, or loss of habitat. Snowdon has also temporarily housed wolves, cougars, and bears.  More recently, Snowdon rehabilitation efforts have been focused on regional black bears.  During 2011, six bear cubs rehabilitated during the winter were released back to their natural habitat.  Two very young black bear cubs were brought in early spring and were healthy enough to be released in the late fall.

Bordered by National Forest and State lands, Snowdon is located in the mountains just outside of McCall, Idaho. The sanctuary is perfectly situated to minimize human contact – a necessary
precaution to ensure the successful release of wild animals.  The location also provides an ideal  ackdrop for educational programs and a popular destination for visitors to McCall.

Snowdon also realizes that the foundation of good stewardship is knowledge and therefore considers education to be an extremely important part of its job.  An educational dome is open to the public where children and adults can learn more about the Idaho's wildlife.  Snowdon's intern program continues to provide valuable experience and training to college students and graduates interested in going into wildlife related careers.

Snowdon also works in partnership with Ponderosa State Park and has presented education programs to school children within a 300-mile radius of McCall for many years.  A new Wild About Wildlife Traveling Trunk Program has been initiated to help youth learn about area wildlife and good stewardship.  These
trunks are available at no cost to teachers to use in their classrooms.

Support for wildlife rehabilitation and wildlife education programs are provided by grants from the McCall-Donnelly Education Foundation, Idaho Humanities Council, Shelton Foundation, and Idaho
Community Foundation, and through donations from local and regional community members.

The Snowdon Art Auction and Wine Tasting is a great way to support Snowdon's educational programs and wildlife rehabilitation efforts! We hope you can attend this year's event!
